Sit better, work better!

I went to the Back Pain show – Olympia on Saturday. The show was quite busy, offering different kinds of massage, treatments and workshops. You could also try all the expensive gimmicks to release back pain without moving. Only two stalls, one yoga, one Pilates, representing exercise and movement. When of course, as research has proven, the best cure for back pain is moving!

It gave me the opportunity to try out new chairs. As we spend a lot of time sitting, the right chair is essential.

As you know my favorite is the Back App stool http://backapp.eu which was very well represented at the show, also appearing on the Backcare (‘the charity for healthier back’) stand. The Back app stool is a moveable saddle sit which allow subtle movements in the spine while sitting. The spine doesn’t get locked in one position so the muscles activate, the ‘core’ engages and the intervertebral discs get hydrated. It is a healthiest way to sit.

If you would rather sit on a chair, then try http://thebackchair.co.uk It has a moveable sit, is nicely designed, adjustable (height, lower back support, arm rests) and has a ‘Stop and Move’ option, so like the Backapp stool you can stop the motion if you get tired. When you go on their website you will see a ‘dynamic sitting’ position, involving leaning forward. I wouldn’t advocate to stay in this position for long, especially if you have to chin up to read the screen. Your back and neck muscles will tire so fascia will tighten to keep you in place. You’ll end up with s stiff back. Sit upright! The ‘traditional static sitting’ position is just bad sitting really. You can sit better than this on a traditional chair…

If you don’t like the idea of moveable sit, the Waldron chairs are traditional looking and “fully adjustable for best postural fit”. I don’t think you can adjust a chair more than that! They specialise in office chair refurbishment and do Xtra range seating for larger users. Check www.waldronfurniture.co.uk for more info.

Sit better, work better! Don’t forget to take breaks!

Cheap massage

Tiger stores are selling great massage tools for £1 to £3.

This is a great tool to massage your tibial band (the outside of your thigh). Easier than massaging on the roll.

This is great for very tight spots or to dig into the fatter area. I like it for Piriformis massage (buttock muscle).

Massage your partner. Fantastic overall massager.

Up and running!

I never realised that a trainer could actually rectify your running gait. The right shoe will support fallen arches or make you heel strike if you don’t. You just need the expert eye of a professional, like Ricky Wood at Up and running in East Sheen! After a test run on the treadmill, he will advice you on which shoe to buy to avoid running injuries.

Buy the right running shoe and run for longer, safely.

Sit Right!

The JML Sit Right

I love my Sit Right for my car seats. I drive a VW Beetle which is a very cute car, so perfect to advertise Posture4U, but not so perfect for my back! The seats are bucket seats so make you slouch. The Sit Right fills up the gap between my back and the seat so I can sit upright. Which is what I want when I advertise Posture4U!

The JML sit right with both straps cut.

For sitting on a desk chair, the Sit Right would be too curved for me. It would make my hips and ribs flare out, accentuating my lordosis (the lower back arch). If I was using a desk chair, I would cut the two straps to decrease the Sit Right curve so it would give me support without pushing me forward.

But I’d rather sit on my Backapp stool!

JML Sit Right as advertised.

When using a Sit Right, check the depth of your seat and the shape of your spine! You might need to cut the straps…

You can buy it on Amazon for £8.99.
